In 1945 just before his death, FDR managed to woo Saudi Arabia’s King Abdul Aziz (Ibn Saud) and his oil away from the British.

The move to incorporate Saudi oil riches into the official spectrum of America’s national interests in the 1940s was all the more remarkable since the United States at the time was entirely self-sufficient in oil and required no imports. When the world’s largest oilfield was discovered at Ghawar in Saudi Arabia in 1948, it added a major lever to America’s oil supremacy over the world economy.

Oil was becoming the essential energy resource, the basis of postwar global economic growth. The US Rockefeller oil majors would hold a tight grip on that power in the new postwar world of the American Century.
